Where can I hide when life’s issues are eating up my brain? Who can I talk with when I don’t know what decision to make?
Stress and Anxiety almost killed me, then… I CHANGED MY MIND!
We all have this thing called ‘chattering brain’, and most of the time we just can’t stop it.
Whether on the course on in real life, when your mind talks jam avoiding the issues at hand won’t help settle it.
Finding the tools that work for you is the key to success for you to start improving those scores and leading a healthier way of handling stress. Here is your first tip FOCUS ON YOUR BREATHING
Here is one very simple exercise – The 4SBT (4 steps breathing technique) This is by far one of the most powerful ways to relieving tension and bringing peace into your being… working with your breath is super powerful. So, on your way to the range or the first tee…
Take 4 steps to inhale 4 steps to exhale
Step one: Intake a small amount of air through your nose (a quarter of your lung capacity) Step two: Intake a little more (fill your lungs half way) Step three: Intake another quarter of your lung capacity Step four: Now fill your lungs all the way Steps five and six hold: Now hold this breath for two counts Step seven: Release a little bit of air here Step eight: A little more now Step nine: Release more air again Step ten: Now release all the air you were holding on to
Start the cycle again. At first it will take some time to become completely comfortable and natural (perhaps you want to practice the breathing process in your mind) then start walking stay with it and follow the flow of your own breath. You will soon be walking and matching your steps to your breath (IN 1, 2, 3, 4, -5-6- OUT 7, 8, 9, 10)
Perform this in your mind then go for a 10 minute walk every day until it becomes natural. You will find your rhythm. Only then incorporate it into your routine
Introducing it on the course:
Like you clean and maintain your irons and woods so you must take care of your mind…I’d recommend start from the club house to the first tee then again to the second tee and make this part of your routine once the pattern becomes natural.
By performing this simple and yet effective exercise your focus is on your breathing not your results! Results, makes us nervous and bringing your attention to your mental game by focusing on your breath will calm the release of epinephrine, a hormone that stimulates the way you do things. Focus of your Breathing and you will soon notice the huge difference in your state of mind.
Self-awareness is being able to clearly see all the different elements of your personality without judgment.
